Municipal Library and Historical Archives – Former Palazzo Bufalini (15th century)

The Municipal Library and Historical Archives are located in one of the Bufalini family’s mansions in Montone.
This residence was built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the ruins of the palace of Braccio Fortebracci, Count of Montone, and has undergone various changes over time depending on its use.
As a result of the Napoleonic suppression of religious orders, the Benedictine nuns of Santa Caterina had gathered in Città di Castello at the Convent of the Giulianelle. During this period, the monastic building, near San Fedele in Montone, where the Benedictine nuns had been living, had in the meantime been used for the expansion of the hospital for the sick. When the nuns wanted to return to Montone, the bishop purchased the Palazzo dei Marchesi Bufalini near the fortress for them. The new monastery was inaugurated in 1827.
The building still shows signs of its previous use.
At the entrance from the high vault, the massive door leading to the cloister is flanked by two large openings. These are framed in stone and brick, and each has a double wrought iron grille. The Library and the Municipal Archive are situated in rooms on the ground floor; three roughly square-shaped, consecutive rooms through large doors with stone frames, where the ceiling vaults rest on elegantly carved corbels. A fourth rectangular room, twice as long as the first three, housed the nuns’ chapel until the new church was built.
