The Ghadge Memorial

In 2023, five memorial stones were erected along the edge of the castle walls; they direct the gaze to points in the valley where, during the war in July 1944, key events took place. Together with the sundial in Piazza San Francesco, which bears the motto, “Omnes sub eodem sole- we all live under the same sun,” the stones form a war memorial dedicated to soldier, Yeshwant Ghadge. In July 1944, he was the sole survivor of a Maratha platoon that had been ambushed by German machine gunfire. He continued to fight but was eventually shot dead.
He was posthumously awarded the highest British honour, the Victoria Cross, for his actions.
The memorial bears witness to the eternal gratitude of the Upper Tiber Valley, to all those men who lost their lives in restoring our freedom.
