Piazza Braccio Fortebraccio is the beating heart of this small town. Like all medieval town squares, it features symbols of civil and religious power.
The public square is home to the majestic civic tower, built in the 13th century together with the town hall, and the Church of Santa Croce, which dates back to 1170.
The three main streets of the town converge here: Via San Francesco, which, with its wide steps, descends from the hill on which the original castle was located (the Castel Vecchio or Capanneto), Via Roma which winds its way down from the hill on which the fortress, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, stands; and Corso Garibaldi, the royal road which climbs from the Verziere gate, where carts carrying goods for the inhabitants’ sustenance and work, used to pass.
