The Porta del Monte, which no longer exists, was the gateway in the walls that led to the large parade ground in front of the fortress.
It was set into the circlular walls which were built after 1378, following a 1374 report by the Governor of Porta Sant’Angelo of Perugia. Oddo Fortebracci, the father of Braccio of Montone, was entrusted with the task of reorganising and restructuring Montone’s fortress and defensive structures.
It is considered to have taken place much later than the construction of the city walls; the depiction of Montone at the feet of the Madonna della Misericordia, painted by Bartolomeo Caporali in 1482, does not feature it. This gate replaced the old, narrow and inconvenient entrance on the opposite side of the fortress. Questa porta sostituì il vecchio accesso, stretto e scomodo preesistente, sul lato opposto della Rocca.
The gate allowed access to one of the main streets of the town, which today is known as Via Roma. It slopes steeply, winding down to the town square. At the highest point along its route are the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Convent of Sant’Agnese and the Palazzo degli Ulivi. Photographic evidence indicates that the gate was lost in the first half of the 20th century.
