Montone is a village of timeless charm, where history, stone, and views speak of centuries of tradition. An authentic place that invites you to discover the true soul of the area.
Origins
Montone has medieval origins and preserves a historic centre of remarkable value, characterised by perfectly preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture. The village developed around the castle, once belonging to the powerful Fortebracci family, whose most illustrious member was the condottiero Braccio da Montone. The urban fabric has remained almost unchanged over the centuries, with its fortified walls, narrow cobbled streets, and squares representing an authentic example of medieval town planning. The historic centre has undergone several restoration projects aimed at preserving its architectural heritage and enhancing its appeal for tourism

Illustrious people
Montone boasts a history enriched by remarkable figures who, from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, have left a lasting legacy. Among them stands the renowned condottiero Braccio Fortebracci, who brought the village to the forefront of the political affairs of his time. Yet beyond the Fortebracci family, Montone has also been the birthplace of many other notable personalities, from different eras and fields, who embody the village’s extraordinary historical, cultural, and spiritual heritage.
The Holy Thorn
The Holy Thorn is a precious relic of Christ’s Passion, gifted at the end of the 15th century to Carlo Fortebracci for his military merits and brought to the village as a symbol of faith and devotion. Tradition tells that the Thorn would bloom on Good Friday, releasing a sweet fragrance that drew pilgrims from afar. Today it is preserved in the Municipal Museum, inside the Church of San Francesco, and its public display is celebrated every year on Easter Monday and the second-to-last Sunday of August, in a festival that blends spirituality, history, and popular tradition.
